Like our Ha’ena pendant, this ring pictures Mount Makana in Ha’ena. It not only represents the beauty, but more importantly the Hawaiian history. The peak of Mount Makana offered a place to challenge the Chief and the strong holds in the community with a match of “Ahi Lele”. All hopeful prospects of chiefly blood would climb the steep 1,590 foot cliffs with hollowed Hau bush branches only to lace them in oil and set them a fire. They would then throw them into the sky and watch the trade winds carry them across the ocean. Typically the chief would always win the match. These graduation ceremonies were not taken lightly and would often last for as long as 10 days with hula, feasting, singing, chanting and gifts.
